Formerly the Ladies Literary Club of Greater Grand Rapids, The Lit is operated by The Penny Loafer and reopened to the public on August 5, 2025. The Lit by The Penny Loafer is a unique experience that includes a small boutique with handmade gifts and accessories, an upstairs lounge, and a grand theater where we invite artists, students, and community organizations to use our space for meetings, concerts, private events, and anything else our community needs. We are currently a nonprofit and are on our way to becoming a 501c3 and welcome everyone through our doors.
THE THEATER BALLROOM
Step into a space where history and modern elegance meet, our 3,000 square-foot ballroom is a showstopper. At its heart is a 20-foot stage, framed by intricate hand-carved trim and a dramatic authentic red velvet curtain, setting the tone for unforgettable performances and gatherings.
✨ Historic architecture surrounds you, with hand-painted murals, original chandeliers, and a warm glow from perimeter and spot lighting. The room comfortably seats 150 guests for dining or 350 in theater-style seating, making it ideal for everything from galas to concerts.
🎤 Behind the scenes, enjoy modern updates including a premium sound system, a 15-foot retractable projection screen, and a dedicated sound booth for seamless production. A pass-through bar and concession stand adds convenience without compromising charm.
