The Lit by the Penny Loafer, the brainchild of Penny Hock, is revitalizing the historic 138-year-old Ladies Literary Club building in downtown Grand Rapids as a vibrant community hub. Originally a pioneering space for women’s fellowship, education, and the arts, the building is returning to its roots with The Parlor at The Lit, The Storm Cloud Boutique by Patti Fitzgerald, a lounge and study area with wi-fi, and an events venue. Driven by a mission to foster creativity, connection, and inclusivity, The Lit hosts events ranging from concerts and comedy nights to yoga and vintage films, while also honoring the legacy of women. With deep ties to the performing arts and a commitment to accessibility and community support, the organization is launching a “Red Curtain Revival” that celebrates the past while empowering future generations.

Step into our café and be instantly transported, like a page torn from a storybook and pressed between the folds of time. Nestled within a building of vintage architecture, its rounded arches and textured stonework evoke an old-world charm that’s both grounding and romantic. A Shakespearean stained glass window, donated in 1915, casts jewel-toned light across the room, whispering tales from another era. Nearby, a large picture window glows with sun catchers that dance in the light, creating a kaleidoscope of warmth and wonder.
The one hundred year-old piano sits proudly, waiting to be played, its keys echoing the café’s blend of nostalgia and creativity. The menu, delicious and vintage-themed, reads like a culinary time capsule, comforting classics with a twist, plated with flair. And then there’s the heart of it all: the staff, who feel less like employees and more like family. Their warmth is palpable, their laughter contagious, and they are so glad to host you in our beautiful building, thanks to the Ladies Literary Club of 1887.
The Parlor café isn’t just a place to grab a bite, it’s a place to linger, to connect, to feel. It’s a living poem with a stained glass soul.
